all about the blunt cut

Short bob, long bob, graduated bob, asymmetric bob, plunging bob ... the blunt bob or ‘square’ cut is full of possibilities and that's why it is always so successful. Here are a few of my secrets to why I believe this look will never go out of style :)

HOW CAN WE CREATE THE IDEAL LENGTH AND TYPE OF ‘SQUARE’ BOB?

It is necessary to take into account the following: the face shape, the thickness, the texture of the hair ... but especially the clients face shape. A round face will suit a longer version of this hairstyle, maybe just skimming the shoulders or a more dramatic option would be a 1920s style bob cut by the cheekbones. A long face will suit a chin length bob to create a more round illusion. And as always an oval face suits pretty much everything, you just need to take into account the size/shape of the forehead.

WHY IS IT THE MOST COMPLEX HAIR CUT TO DO?

A ‘square’ cut can quickly make you look like a little girl or the complete opposite! It is also thought that a hairstylist simply just cuts a straight line with the scissors, but this cut needs far more precision than that! There is a lot of work to balance each side and to build that perfect straight line. For the perfect square, if we cut everything the same length, we will have a lot of weight on the ends and it will create a triangle effect. It will be thick on the mid-lengths and ends, then square will not be smooth and will stick out. Sectioning the hair in small sections is a must!

WHAT IS THE TECHNIQUE FOR A BEAUTIFUL ‘SQUARE’ IN THIS CASE?

To obtain a beautiful square, you must first draw a section at the neck that will cut two centimeters shorter than the desired length. Then continue the rest of the hair, section by section, advancing each time the length bit by bit.. This gives the impression that everything is the same length but that it is not really the case...just some insider hairdresser tricks!

HOW TO OBTAIN VOLUME WITH A BLUNT CUT BY AVOIDING THE "MUSHROOM" EFFECT?

It depends on the face, but generally avoid giving too much volume on the sides. So really thick hair should have a longer version of this hair style and would be necessary to texturize the hair. This helps to take out the weight and help manage the bulk of the hair. Then depending on your preference of how you like your hair, you should be able to either leave it to dry naturally or use a round brush and blowout your hair if you wish.

HOW TO INTEGRATE A FRINGE TO A BLUNT CUT?

Everything depends on your forehead: if you have a small forehead avoid a fringe! Same if the you have a petit face because it will just hide your face and ‘shallow’ your face. For those who have big eyes and a big forehead, the most beautiful fringes are those that ‘skim’ the edge of the eyes. That will create a bold look. Long fringes on a square haircut can work if the person is tall. On someone petite and who has a lot of hair, avoid as well.

WHAT DOES SQUARE CUTTING REQUIRE?

You can have fun styling this cut on all hair lengths: wavy, smooth ... But do not touch the roots and it is best to create volume towards the ends. Generally, it is best to maintain this cut every two months, but if you have a longer square cut your hair may need a refresh after only 6 weeks

WHY IS A BLUNT CUT STILL SUCCESSFUL TODAY?

Because it is timeless! It is something that doesn’t age with time. It is a haircut that can work with everyone, no matter, age, hair type etc. It is always elegant, refined and feminine.
